Steak Tacos with Yogurt Lime Slaw

How delicious do these look?!

Sometimes you just need some Mexican spices in your life, and nothing but cumin, lime and cilantro will do.

This was exactly the craving I was experiencing the evening these steak tacos of deliciousness came into my life. I knew I wanted something that would be simple to make, but would still give me the tangy, creamy, and spicy flavors I so desperately wanted.

My thought process was as follows: What’s simple to make? Tacos. How do I combine everything else I’m craving? TACO SLAW!

I’ve never made any type of Mexican coleslaw before, but I figured it couldn’t be too difficult. After all, it’s just your typical coleslaw with a few different spices mixed in, right?

Well, thankfully, I was right – and it was ridiculously easy to put together! And so. Darn. Delicioso. 😍

For this steak taco recipe, I utilized my most favorite of ingredient substitutions – using Greek yogurt for sour cream! If you haven’t tried this before, I’d highly recommend it. Not only is yogurt much less calorie dense, but the flavor is a lot lighter as well. It’s delightful.

Warning: Subbing in Greek yogurt for sour cream can get addicting. You’ve been warned.

Truly though, these steak tacos are all about the slaw. You could substitute the steak for any protein of your choice – chicken, fish, tofu – and it would still be just as amazing with this slaw. The creaminess of the yogurt and acidity of the lime come together beautifully to create this true star of this show, y’all.

So the next time you’re craving some spicy, delicious Mexican food, give these a try! Buen provecho!

Steak Tacos with Yogurt Lime Slaw

Using greek yogurt in this steak taco recipe gives the dish a lighter feeling - both in taste and on the waistline!

  • 1 cu plain greek yogurt
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 2 tsp taco seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp roasted ground cumin
  • 1/2 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped
  • 1/4 cu chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 16oz bag of coleslaw mix
  • 1 lb of flank steak
  • corn tortillas
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 avocado

  1. Mix together the greek yogurt and next 6 ingredients into a small bowl. Stir well to combine.
  2. Add in the coleslaw mix, and toss thoroughly until all of the mix is coated. Set aside.
  3. Salt and pepper your steak. Sear over high heat for 4 minutes per side to sear. Continue cooking over low heat until the steak is cooked to your desired doneness (I'd recommend medium-rare which is about 125° F). Remove from the grill and allow the steak 3-5 minutes to rest.
  4. While the steak is resting, heat the oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Fry up your tortillas for about 20 seconds on each side. Set aside.
  5. After allowing the steak to rest, cut into thin slices against the grain.
  6. Build your tacos - tortilla, steak, and slaw. Garnish with additional cilantro and avocado slices (or add cheese, hot sauce, or any of your favorite taco toppings)

We cooked our steak on the grill, but you can definitely use a stove-top skillet instead.
